Tech Sales Job Hunt
After exploring different career paths, I realized that breaking into B2B sales was my ticket to mastering one of the most valuable skills for entrepreneurship: Sales. With my extroverted, personable, and persuasive personality, I felt this field was a natural fit for me. Here's how I landed a job in tech sales:
Job Search:
Tailor Your Resume and Cover Letter: Customize your resume and craft a compelling cover letter that showcases your relevant skills and experiences for the role.
Network with Alumni on LinkedIn: Connect with alumni from your university who work in similar roles. Arrange informational interviews to gain insights into the industry. If the conversation goes well, politely ask for a referral.
Research Top Companies: Look for the best companies in the industry through Google or ChatGPT recommendations. Visit their career pages and check for openings in Sales Development Representative (SDR) or Business Development Representative (BDR) roles.
Use LinkedIn Job Search: Utilize LinkedIn's job search feature to find SDR/BDR roles in your desired location. Focus on finding in-person or hybrid positions for a more hands-on learning experience.
Application Process:
Apply Strategically: Apply to all the roles you're interested in within a day or two of finding them. Keeping track of your applications will be easier this way.
Prepare for Interviews: Thorough preparation is key. From my experience, it’s better to prepare everything before even applying for jobs. I'll cover this topic with a step-by-step guide in a separate blog post.
Navigating the Process:
Stay Neutral: Approach the job search with a neutral mindset to avoid disappointment if some companies reject you. Think of it like approaching potential partners with a one-night stand mentality – no feelings attached…LOL
Keep it Confidential: Avoid discussing your job search with friends or family to avoid unnecessary pressure. This will help you perform better in interviews without subconscious performance anxiety.
By following these steps and maintaining a proactive yet detached approach, you can increase your chances of landing a sales gig in the tech industry. Stay focused, persistent, and adaptable throughout the process.
